Lincoln Continues To Lose More Wetlands
Elected officials from fourteen Counties are urging the Nebraska Environmental Trust to revoke grants designated for wildlife conservation.
Target projects for receiving the grant money involve wetlands in the Rainwater basin. Unfortunately, this region has already lost ninety per cent of it's land to agriculture.
Which Do You Prefer To Look At?
One would think that 90% is more than fair, but officials say that setting aside property for wildlife diminishes county tax bases and prevents land from being used for agriculture.
More cropland means more chemical pollution, less habitat for wildlife who are already being pushed to extinction, fewer trees to keep Nebraska's air breathable and additional land being tilled that should be left idle for the health of the planet.
Might we find other ways to keep our coffers healthy besides diminishing what little beauty we have left in the state and squeezing our wildlife out?
C'mon people, aren't there some things in life that have their own intrinsic value and should be valued above money?
